On August 18, 1999, at 3:00 p.m. the California Fish and Game Commission will conduct an emergency teleconference call to reconsider its June 18 action to close a 200-yard area at the mouth of the Klamath River to salmon fishing. Prior to setting the inriver allocations each year, the Commission receives public comments regarding the economic impacts of the salmon fishing on the businesses, counties and cities that depend upon inriver fishermen. The Commission^s action to close the river mouth was done in an effort to spread-out the catch in the lower river and to extend the fishing season before the lower river quota is reached. The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors and the Klamath River Basin Task Force believe the closure will cause undo economic impacts to local RV parks and businesses and have requested the Commission to reconsider reopening the river mouth to salmon fishing. The Commission has agreed to provide the groups an opportunity to make their case during the teleconference call. The teleconference call will originate from the 13th Floor Conference Room, Room 1320, in the Resources Building, 1416 Ninth Street, Sacramento. Commissioner Douglas B. McGeoghegan will be at the Sacramento location. Commission President, Richard Thieriot, will be at his office in San Francisco, 44 New Montgomery Street. Commissioner Mike Chrisman will be at his Office, 2425 S. Blackstone Street, Tulare. There will also be a speaker phone arranged at the Department of Fish and Game^s Northern California and North Coast Regional office located at 601 Locust Street, Redding. In addition, the Del Norte County Board of Supervisors has arranged to have a speaker phone available at its Board Chambers, 583 G Street, Suite#1, Crescent City. Interested individuals are encouraged to provide written comments to the Commission office(Fax No. 916-653-5040)or to attend the teleconference meeting at one of the locations listed above.
