OLYMPIA — A special coho salmon fishing opportunity will open Aug. 16 in the Ocean Shores Boat Basin, thanks to a cooperative project between the Quinault Indian Nation and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). An agreement between WDFW and the Quinault tribe will allow recreational salmon fishing to continue in the boat basin until Jan. 31. The daily limit will be six salmon of any species, with a 12-inch minimum size, only four of which may be adults. Barbed hooks will be allowed. A night closure and non-buoyant lure restriction will be in effect. Approximately 102,350 young coho were initially reared at WDFW^s Humptulips hatchery and then transferred to net pens in the Ocean Shores Boat Basin. The Quinaults raised the young coho in the pens and released them in the spring of 1998. The returning adult fish expected this fall are the result of this cooperative rearing effort and should provide a local fishery similar to the one in the Westport Boat Basin. The coho are expected to begin returning in early September, providing opportunities for shore-based and boat angling for salmon in Grays Harbor. Anglers are reminded that the marina is private property, to obey signs and use caution while accessing the area. A small-boat launch is available at the marina for a nominal fee.
