The application deadline is Friday, Oct. 20 for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources^ annual drawing for public waterfowl hunts on 16 areas. A random computer drawing will take place in the department^s Columbia office to select successful applicants. Hunters who applied for the hunts last year will automatically receive an application in the mail for this year^s hunts. Sixteen waterfowl management areas are included in the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) computer-drawn hunts. More than 1,300 slots for hunters are collectively available this season on Santee Coastal Reserve near McClellanville, Bear Island (East and West units) and Springfield/The Cut, both areas near Green Pond; Samworth and Santee Delta (East and West units) near Georgetown; Santee Cooper near Eutaw Springs; Sandy Beach on Lake Moultrie; the Broad River and Enoree River in Fairfield and Newberry counties, respectively; and Beaverdam Creek in Anderson County. Two special waterfowl hunts are included in the computer drawing: the adult-youth hunts at Donnelley Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Colleton County and at Fants Grove WMA in Anderson County. To be eligible for the adult-youth hunts, each adult must be accompanied by a youth 10 to 17 years of age, and the youth must participate in the hunt. All hunters who hunt waterfowl on Wildlife Management Area (WMA) lands must have in their possession a state hunting license, state duck stamp, federal duck stamp, Harvest Information Program (HIP) migratory bird permit and WMA permit. A one-day WMA permit is available only for the designated hunt drawing, only to South Carolina residents and only at the time of application. The $5.50 cost of the one-day permit must be included with the hunt drawing application fee. The hunt application fee is $50 per adult hunter, and $20 per youth under age 16 or Junior Outdoorsman license holder. Fees are returned to unsuccessful applicants. Only one application per hunter is permitted, but a party of four people may apply on the same form. Applications can be obtained from DNR offices statewide, by writing Waterfowl Hunt Drawing, DNR, PO Box 167, Columbia, SC 29202, or on the DNR Web page at http://www.dnr.state.sc.us. Completed applications must be received in the DNR^s Columbia office no later than 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20. Applications must be received through the mail or in person; no fax applications will be accepted. Applications may be delivered to Room 255 of the Rembert C. Dennis Building at 1000 Assembly St. in Columbia. Once hunters are drawn, permits are non-transferable. Cancellations by hunters drawn will not be refunded; canceled slots will be filled by random selection of applicants who were not drawn.
