COLUMBUS, OH - The bucks-only special early primitive deer season will be open October 23-28 on the Salt Fork, Shawnee and Wildcat Hollow public hunting areas, according to the Ohio Department of Natural resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Last year, hunters tagged 260 antlered bucks during the early primitive season on these areas. Legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Hunters may use crossbows, longbows, muzzleloading rifles of at least .38 caliber or larger, and muzzleloading shotguns of 10, 12, 16, 20, 28 and .410 gauge using one ball per barrel. All deer harvested during this special season must be taken to the primitive area check station for permanent tagging by 8 p.m. of the day it was killed. The three early primitive season hunting areas are located within Deer Zone C which allows hunters to take a limit of two deer this year. Also, only one antlered buck may be taken in Ohio per license year, September 1 through August 31. Hunters who tag an antlered deer during the early primitive deer season are then eligible to take an antlerless deer during any of the other deer seasons in Zone A, B, or C. A limit of four antlerless deer additionally may be taken with urban deer permits during the statewide archery, gun and primitive deer seasons. Elsewhere, the statewide archery deer season opens October 7. Crossbows and longbows only may be used to take deer during the archery season. The statewide deer gun season will be open November 27 through December 3. The statewide primitive deer season will be open December 27-30.
