HARRISBURG - Dr. Gary Alt, Pennsylvania Game Commission Deer Management Section supervisor, will provide the House Game and Fisheries Committee with an update on Tuesday, Oct. 3, on deer research currently being conducted by the agency, and outline future deer research being planned. The committee^s meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. in Room 203 of the South Office Building, adjacent to the State Capitol, Harrisburg. "Dr. Alt^s presentation to the House is a part of the Game Commission^s ongoing effort to keep the channels of communication open between the agency and the General Assembly," said Vern Ross, Commission Executive Director. "Under Alt^s direction, and with the support of the Board of Game Commissioners, Pennsylvania has taken dramatic steps forward in better managing our deer resource. And, for the first time in many years, other states are beginning to take notice of Pennsylvania^s deer management program." An article in the August edition of Field & Stream, a nationally-recognized outdoors magazine, noted that Alt^s "efforts are being closely monitored across the country and could eventually impact whitetail hunting everywhere." Written by Jon Farley, an outdoor writer based in Lehigh County, the article also stated that other researchers are following the Game Commission^s deer studies, "as many view Alt^s idea as the basis for similar applications in their states." "What Gary^s talking about breaks just about every rule in the book, but it makes an awful lot of good sense," Kent Kammermeyer, senior wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, told Farley. To further the agency^s public outreach efforts, Ross also noted that Alt plans to present the Game Commission deer management program to the public in another series of public meetings throughout Pennsylvania following the January Commission meeting. "We understand that we have an obligation to explain the reasons and rationale behind the new direction in the Game Commission^s deer management program," Ross said. "Dr. Alt, and the entire Deer Management Section, are committed to rising to that challenge."
