Deer hunts on Aiken County^s Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area will begin with an archery and primitive weapons hunt scheduled for Oct. 29-30, and a special scouting day has been scheduled from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. No weapons are allowed during the scouting day. Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of 10,012 acres owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. Crackerneck WMA is in Aiken County along the Savannah River and lies south of the town of Jackson, off SC 125. Access is through the check station gate off Brown Road. During the Oct. 29-30 archery and primitive weapons hunt at Crackerneck WMA, bag limits for archers will be a total of two deer of either sex, and for muzzleloaders, two deer, buck only. Hunters may also take hogs. Still gun hunts are scheduled from Nov. 5 - Jan. 1, on Fridays, Saturdays and Thanksgiving Day only. Bag limits are two deer per day, a total of five deer for all gun hunts, not to include more than three bucks. Button bucks apply toward the buck limit. Hunts are for bucks only except during either sex periods on Nov. 5-6, Nov. 12-13, Nov. 19-20, Dec. 3- 4, Dec. 10-11 and Dec. 17-18. Hunters may take hogs on all deer hunts. The use of dogs or buckshot is prohibited. The Crackerneck WMA entrance gate will open at 4:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. Anyone using Crackerneck is required to sign in before entering the area and sign out before leaving.
