The National Marine Fisheries Service has approved a change in the minimum size limit for king mackerel from 20 inches fork length to 24 inches fork length. The change in minimum size limit became effective Sept. 20 after a recommendation by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council under its coastal Migratory Pelagic Resources Fishery Management Plan. The change is in effect for the council^s area of jurisdiction which extends from the Virginia/North Carolina line through Key West, Fla., from 3 miles to 200 miles offshore and applies to both commercial and recreational fisheries. The current recreational catch limit off South Carolina of three fish per angler per day and the commercial trip limit of 3,500 pounds per trip remains unchanged. David Cupka, director of the Office of Fisheries Management with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources in Charleston, reminds anglers that under South Carolina law, "These same king mackerel regulations are also in effect in state waters."
