LANSING--In an attempt to reduce the number of elk outside of their primary range, a January elk hunting season, January 20-26, has been approved by Rebecca Humphries, Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division Chief. "We did not achieve our harvest objectives in the September and December elk seasons; therefore, a January hunting season will be conducted," Humphries said. "A quota of 15 any elk and 20 antlerless-only elk licenses has been established." A random drawing of 35 individuals, who applied but were not selected for the 2000 elk hunting season, were chosen to participate in the January hunt. A letter to the successful hunters explaining the details of the hunt will be distributed by the end of December. All participants are required to attend a hunter orientation prior to the elk hunt. According to Glen Matthews, Northeast Wildlife Management Unit Supervisor, hunting will be difficult. Deep snow conditions and low temperatures will require extra effort from hunters. "Hunters will need to investigate hunting opportunities, especially gaining access to private lands harboring elk," Matthews said.
