PRATT -- The early prairie chicken season will close Oct. 15, but that doesn^t mean Kansas hunters have to put away their shotguns. While the early chicken season offers the chance to hunt prairie chicken in a traditional upland setting, duck season began in western Kansas Sept. 30 and the season starts Oct. 7 in the Early Zone, which includes portions of central Kansas. Fall duck seasons are divided into three zones, each zone having two hunting segments as follows: * Early Zone -- Oct. 7 through Dec. 10 and Dec. 23 through Dec. 31 * Late Zone -- Oct. 21 through Oct. 29 and Nov. 4 through Jan. 7, 2001 * High Plains Zone -- Sept. 30 through Jan. 1 and Jan. 19 through Jan. 21, 2001 The daily bag limit is six ducks, and the possession limit is two daily bag limits. Some further restrictions apply to the daily bag limits on ducks. Only one hen mallard may be taken per day. In addition, only one each of the following ducks may be taken in one day: pintail, canvasback, and mottled duck. No more than two wood ducks, two redheads, two scaup, and five mallards may be taken per day. The shooting hours for ducks are from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. For more complete information on duck zones and other rules, obtain a copy of the 2000 Kansas Waterfowl Regulations Summary from any regional office of the Department of Wildlife and Parks. This brochure may also be viewed and downloaded from the department^s website (www.kdwp.state.ks.us), which also contains weekly waterfowl reports.
