Nebraska^s Game and Parks Commissioners set Nebraska^s 2000 waterfowl, crow, and falconry seasons at a meeting in Lincoln Aug. 31. In addition to setting season dates and regulations, the Commissioners approved some major changes in the 2000 waterfowl hunting season. Among the changes was opening the Low Plains Late duck hunting season about a week later than last year and putting the split on the front end of the season. This year the South-Central and Panhandle dark goose hunting units will be combined to form the "Platte River Unit," and splits on the front ends of all dark goose seasons were approved. Nebraska^s 2000 waterfowl, crow and falconry seasons will be: DUCKS Low Plains Early: Sept. 30 - Dec. 10 and Dec. 16-17 Low Plains Late: Oct. 14-15 and Oct. 21 – Dec. 31 High Plains: Sept. 30 – Dec. 10 and Dec. 15 - Jan. 7, 2001 Youth Hunt Season: Sept. 23-24 Daily Bag Limit: All areas - Conventional System: 6 ducks. May include no more than: 5 mallards of which 2 can be females, 1 mottled duck, 1 pintail, 1 canvasback, 2 wood ducks, 2 redheads, and 3 scaup (greater and lesser combined). Possession Limit: Twice the daily bag. Early Teal Season: Sept. 9-17 COOTS Season: Concurrent with duck season dates. Daily Bag Limit: 15. Possession Limit: Twice the daily bag. DARK GEESE East Unit: Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 and Oct. 7 – Jan. 7, 2001 North Central Unit: Sept. 30 - Jan. 2, 2001 Platte River Unit: Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 28 - Jan. 28, 2001 (The Platte River Unit is a combination of the South Central and Panhandle Dark Geese Units). North Unit: Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 28 - Jan. 28, 2001 Daily Bag Limit: All Units - Three (3) geese. Possession Limit: Twice the daily bag. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE Statewide: Sept. 30 - Dec. 24. Daily Bag Limit: Two (2) geese. Possession Limit: Twice the daily bag. LIGHT GEESE Statewide: Sept. 30 - Jan. 12, 2001 The Conservation Action will be set at a future Commission meeting. Daily Bag Limit: Twenty (20) geese. Possession Limit: None. CROWS Statewide: Oct. 1 - Nov. 15 and Jan. 20, 2001 - Apr. 7, 2001 Special Public Health Hazard Order: Nov. 16 - Jan. 19, 2001 Daily Bag Limit: None. Possession Limit: None. FALCONRY Statewide: Concurrent with waterfowl season dates within zones and management units. Daily Bag Limit: Three (3) birds. Possession Limit: Twice the daily bag. In other action the Commissioners: – set Oct. 20, 2000, as the date for a public hearing to amend administrative regulations pertaining to adjustments in permit fees; – set Oct. 20, 2000, as the date for a public hearing to amend boating regulations; – set Oct. 20, 2000, as the date for a public hearing to amend fishing regulations; – set Oct. 20, 2000, as the date for a public hearing to amend mountain sheep firearm and archery regulations; – approved an easement allowing the Roosevelt Public Power District to construct an underground power line across Wildcat Hills WMA to service land owned by the Nature Conservancy; – approved the Habitat Acquisition Plan which will provide for the long-term protection, management and restoration of a diverse, balanced and high quality assemblage of fish, wildlife and plant resources within the state for the benefit of the people and natural resources; – approved the Wild Turkey Management Plan which addresses the future restoration and management goals for the wild turkey in the state; – approved a request for permission to vend spirits by the owner-operator of the Commission^s Otter Creek Lodge concession at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area.
