SANTA FE, N.M. - Hunters who want to pursue sandhill cranes in the Middle Rio Grande Valley or the southwest quadrant of the state need to apply for permits by Sept. 9. That^s also the deadline to apply for pheasant permits on the Seven-Rivers and W.S. Huey hunts. A total of 260 sandhill crane permits will be issued this fall. In the Middle Rio Grande Valley the crane hunts are scheduled Oct. 28-29 (F-0-101), Nov. 18-19 (F-0-102), Dec. 9-10 (F-0-103), and Jan. 13-14, 2001 (F-0-105). The southwest hunt (F-0-104) is open Nov. 4-5 and Jan. 6-7. A total of 40 permits are available for the youth pheasant hunt (P-0-001) at Seven-Rivers Wildlife Management Area. Hunters must be under 18 on Dec. 9, the day of the hunt. The deadline to apply is Sept. 9. This year hunters must have entry permits for the Dec. 16 pheasant hunt on the Seven-Rivers and W.S. Huey Wildlife Management Areas. There will be 65 permits issued for the Seven Rivers hunt (P-0-002) and 40 for the W.S. Huey (P-0-003). The deadline to apply for the dark goose hunt in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, the Youth-Only Light Goose Hunt on Bernardo and the Bernardo/Casa Colorada light goose hunts is Oct. 14. Applicants should use Form 2000. More details on upland game are available in New Mexico^s small game proclamation, now available at Game and Fish Department offices and from about 240 license vendors throughout the state.
