If you haven^t decided on where you want to hunt Sept. 1, the opening day of dove season, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offers some tips on good spots for you. Scott Taylor, the Commission^s Upland Game Program Manager, says sunflower, millet or wheat fields, which generally provide good dove hunting opportunities, have been planted at the following wildlife management areas: North-central: Sherman Reservoir, Loup Junction, and Pressey. Northeast: Syas, Oak Valley, and Black Island. Southeast: Osage, Twin Oaks, Bowwood, Taylor^s Branch, Diamond Lake, Prairie Knoll, Branched Oak Lake, Twin Lakes, Pawnee Lake, Yankee Hill, Wildwood, and Rake^s Creek. Schilling opens to public hunting Sept. 4 (restricted youth hunts are held there Sept. 1 - 3), and only non-toxic shot may be used on that area. Southwest: Clear Creek, North River, Medicine Creek and Swanson. South-central: Alexandria Lakes, Alexandria Southwest, Rose Creek, Little Blue, Dry Sandy, and Meridian. Other wildlife management areas across the state can provide good dove hunting opportunities depending on local conditions. Contact your nearest Game and Parks Commission district office for area-specific information. The 2000 dove hunting season opens Sept, 1 and continues through Oct. 30. The daily bag limit is 15 doves, the possession limit is 30. Shooting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset. Resident dove hunters 16 years and older, and all non-resident hunters, are required to have a 2000 Nebraska small game hunting license, a Nebraska habitat stamp, and a Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration number. HIP numbers can be obtained by calling 1-888-403-2473, by registering on the Commission^s Internet web site at http://ngpc.state.ne.us/ or at any Commission district office. "Other wildlife management areas throughout the state can provide good dove hunting opportunities depending on local conditions," Taylor said. "Hunters should contact their nearest Game and Parks Commission district office for area-specific information. I recommend that hunters do some pre-season scouting wherever they plan to hunt."
