PRATT -- Under a new regulation this year, all permits leftover after the initial drawing revert to whitetail antlerless only permits, and some 39,500 are leftover. Each hunter may obtain as many as two of these leftover permits, providing ample opportunity to fill the freezer with deer meat. The cost for leftover deer permits is $30.50. So, if a hunter has drawn a permit in the initial drawing, obtained two leftover permits, he or she now can take three deer. But there^s more. Whitetail antlerless only deer game "tags" are available over the counter for $10.50. If the hunter purchases these, he may now take five deer. In addition, unit archery tags are available over the counter, bringing the total possible deer per hunter to six. While permits left over from the initial drawing are now antlerless only permits, they offer hunters the opportunity to take several deer while focusing on whitetail does, thus helping stabilize the state^s deer herd.
