The following information pertains to New Jersey^s first black bear season since 1971, including the schedule of the free bear hunting seminars and check station locations. Please check the Fish and Wildlife DIGEST for more complete information. There is a quota of 175 bears. Once this quota is reached the season will close. The notification number for season closure is the permit hotline number, 609-292-9192. Please confirm the season has not closed before hunting. Notification will also be announced by press, radio and this Website. Season: · First segment: September 18 and September 22, 2000 · Second segment: September 30 - October 27, 2000 · Third segment: December 4 - 9, 2000 Hunting Areas: · First segment: Area north of I-78 and west of I-287 · Second segment: Area north of I-195 · Third segment: Area north of I-195 Allowable Weapons: · First segment: Bow (40 lbs. or greater), Muzzleloader (min. .50 cal.) and Shotgun (10 to 20 gauge w/slugs) · Second segmentt: Bow (40 lbs. or greater) only · Third segment: Bow (40 lbs. or greater), Shotgun (10 to 20 gauge w/slugs) and Muzzleloader (min. .50 cal.) Allowable Methods: · Still hunting, stands, drives; hunter orange required, except for bow hunters; shooting bear in den is prohibited. Hunting Hours: · ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset Bag Limit: · One bear per hunter per segment. All size and age bears are legal. Season will close when 175 bears are harvested. Reporting: · Bears must be tagged with a Transportation Tag (free) which will be available at training seminars or field offices in late August or early September. All bears must be taken to a check station for a possession tag.
