Arizona Game and Fish Department Director Duane Shroufe kicked off Arizona’s new Family Fishing License by presenting the first one to Phoenix Mayor Skip Rimza, compliments of the Wildlife For Tomorrow Foundation, during the "Mayor’s October Fish" Oct. 9 at Encanto Park. "Our new Family Fishing License is really an exciting concept to help bolster Arizona’s outdoor family tradition. Mayor Rimza and his family provide a great example of this active outdoor family tradition in action," said Shroufe. Shroufe pointed out that the Family Fishing License was created in response to requests from the angling public. "Unfortunately, our public surveys show that the percentage of families enjoying the outdoors is shrinking. We hope that in some measure this new Family Fishing license will aid in restoring those healthy family outdoor traditions and values," Shroufe said. The Wildlife For Tomorrow Foundation, which provided Rimza^s license, is a non-profit organization that promotes awareness and support for wildlife conservation. The Family Fishing License, which includes trout fishing (no trout stamp needed), is now available at all seven Arizona Game Fish Department offices across the state. The license price is computed in the following manner; the cost of the family fishing license will be full price for the first family member, 80 percent for the second, plus $2 for each child. The current fishing license cost, including a trout stamp, is $22. Eighty percent of that is $17.60. Licenses for the year 2000 are now available. Shroufe also pointed out that the Family Fishing License goes hand-in-hand with the Arizona Game and Fish Commission and the Department’s ongoing commitment to increase youth hunting and fishing opportunities through special discount licenses, special hunts, and organized events. "The youth and families of this state are our future. We need to encourage families and youth to turn off the T.V. and video games and turn on to our fantastic outdoor opportunities. It all starts at the individual family level," Shroufe said.
