MOUNT VERNON Much of the Skagit River opens to sport coho and chum salmon fishing on Friday (Oct. 1). While the Skagit^s popular pink salmon fishery could not be opened this year for conservation reasons, the coho and chum season will remain open through the fall. The daily bag limit is two salmon which must be at least 12 inches in length. Pink and chinook salmon must be released. As of Friday, the Skagit will be open from the mouth to the pipeline crossing at Sedro Woolley through Dec. 31. The section of the Skagit from the Sedro Woolley pipeline crossing to the Dalles Bridge at Concrete also will open on Friday, but waters in this section will close at the end of November. Upstream of Gilligan Creek there are night closure and non-buoyant lure restrictions in effect for all fish species through Nov. 30. The section of the Skagit from the Dalles Bridge upstream to the Cascade River will be open Nov. 1 through Dec. 31, and anglers will be allowed to keep only chum salmon. No changes were made in the season on the Cascade River. It will open Friday for two hatchery coho as planned. Hatchery coho are identified by the presence of a healed scar where the adipose fin was located. The Cascade will remain open through the end of November.
