SIOUX FALLS -- Hunting dog training, cooking wild game, and waterfowl calling are all featured seminars at the first annual National Hunting and Fishing Day celebration at The Outdoor Campus, Saturday, Sept. 25 in Sioux Falls. "We would like to offer beginning and experienced hunters an opportunity to come and expand on their outdoor skills," Chris McCart, program coordinator, said. "This day is designed to give people a chance to learn and try new things, as well as add to their repertoire of tried and true hunting skills." All seminars are free, McCart said, and the event culminates in a wild game sampler. "It is a chance for everyone to try some easy, but good wild game recipes," McCart said. "Cooking wild game can be more than using Cream of Mushroom Soup." Class schedule includes: * 9:30 to 11 a.m. Introduction to Fishing for Families, taught by The Outdoor Campus staff and volunteers. * 1 to 2 p.m. Hunting Dog Selection and Training, taught by Jack Hanson, instructor for Sioux Empire Kennel Club Gun Dog class. * 1 - 2 p.m. Gun Cleaning and Care by Ron Putzier, owner of Ron^s Gun Shop * 2-3:30 p.m. Whitetail Deer Hunting and Ecology, taught by SDSU wildlife graduate student Lowell Schmitz. * 3-4 p.m. Cooking Wild Game, taught by The Outdoor Campus staff and volunteers * 4-5 p.m. Attracting Ducks and Geese by Jim Thompson, champion caller Demonstrations include: * 2-2:30 p.m. Hunting Dogs demonstration by Jack Hanson, Instructor of Sioux Empire Kennel Club Gun Dog class. * 3-3:45 p.m. Hunting with Falcons by Wicker Bill, licensed falcon trainer * 4-5 p.m. Wild Game Cooking Booths are open from 1- 5 p.m. and feature: * gun safety * TIPs - Turn in Poachers * Ask a Conservation Officer The Wild Game Sampler begins at 5 p.m., and reservations are necessary. Participants will get a copy of all recipes used in the sampler. All seminars and the wild game sampler are free, but require pre-registration.
