VANCOUVER - Anglers fishing in the Columbia River below Bonneville Dam to a line from Grays Point in Washington and Tongue Point in Oregon must release chinook salmon, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced today. Sport fishers may continue to retain hatchery coho and steelhead in that part of the river. Hatchery coho and steelhead have no adipose fin, which is located on the back between the dorsal fin and tail. Chinook returns to the Columbia River will be reviewed on Sept. 17. The suspension on retaining chinook may be lifted at that time if the runs warrant that action. WDFW reminds anglers that the Buoy 10 sport fishery remains open for hatchery coho and steelhead as well as sturgeon but chinook must be released.
