Point Breeze, NY .... If you still have doubts that Lake Ontario^s on the road to a full recovery, just look at the record! The Lake Ontario Counties (LOC) Fall Trout and Salmon Derby, which is currently in progress, is rewriting the record book for the big lake, especially in the Chinook Salmon category. Already they have broken the long-standing salmon mark, by recording a total of eight (8) Kings so far, weighing in over the 40 pound- mark! That brand new standard makes the old ESLO Derby best-ever mark of three (3), seem insignificant. Still a long holiday weekend to go and already 40 Kings on the board! The current leader in the Chinook Salmon category is a brute of a fish, weighing in at 42.11 pounds. That grand-prize leader was caught by Travis Kolasienski of Belchertown, MA, out of Oswego. Look down the leader board and the 20th place King is in the neighborhood of 38 pounds! Best-ever for 20th place in the old ESLO Derby was 35 pounds! Maybe this will be the year for that highly elusive 50 pound King!? You never know! It could be you! There is still time to try your fishing luck! The Steelhead Division still has a lunker 22.12 pound fish topping the=20 list, which was caught by Captain Bob Cinelli, fishing out of Olcott. Even in that division, the 20th place fish is a most respectable 18 pounder. The Lake Trout Division is led by an angler from Exter, Maine, Stephen Bartlett, with a 25.02 pound wall-hanger. It should also be noted that this year the LOC Derby registration has already passed the 1998 total, with 4,760 registered adults, along with 323 youth! This, of course means more money paid out for the runner-up positions. Top prize remains at $20,000! The LOC Derbies (spring and fall) are under the auspices of the non-profit group, Lake Ontario Sportfishing Promotion Council, composed of representatives from each of the seven counties bordering the shoreline of Lake Ontario. All profits from the derbies are returned to be utilized for the promotion of the Lake Ontario fishery, education about the fishery and resource enhancement projects. The awards ceremonies are set for the final day of the derby, on Monday, September 6, 1999, beginning at 6 PM in the Orleans County Marine Park, Point Breeze, NY. There is still plenty of time to REEL in that big one and share in some of the cash and prizes. For further information and registration call LOC Derby Headquarters at 1-888-REEL-2-IN.
