Natural Resources Minister John Snobelen today announced that the 1999 Take A Kid Fishing Week in Ontario will run from August 1 through 7. "Taking kids fishing is about giving them a head start on the responsible use and stewardship of Ontario^s lakes and streams," said Mr. Snobelen. "The future health of Ontario^s fisheries depends on our kids." Designed to introduce kids to the joys, challenges and responsibilities of sportfishing, Take a Kid Fishing Week was begun by MNR in 1997 on the advice of the provincial Fish & Wildlife Advisory Board. The government appointed the board in 1996 to provide the ministry with advice on investing angling and hunting licence revenues in fish and wildlife conservation in Ontario. People who fish are invited to use the week to "take a kid fishing." This is a great opportunity for young people to be involved in a fun and practical way with the province^s aquatic resources. People with little or no fishing experience can seek information from fishing friends, or follow the steps described in the Introduction to Fishing Information Package. It contains a "how to" booklet on taking kids fishing, a sticker, a personalized certificate, information on how to catch the 1999 "Fish of the Year" and a card identifying fish that are likely to be seen or caught. The package is free and may be obtained by calling 1-800-667-1940. All fishing regulations apply during Take A Kid Fishing Week and licences are required for anglers from 18 to 64 years old.
