New Orleans, LA, July 29, 1999 -- The biggest show in professional fishing takes over the Louisiana Superdome Thursday as 45 of America^s best bass pros invade the watery world of the Louisiana Delta in search of fame and fortune in the 29th BASS Masters Classic world championship. The three-day event is a coronation of the sport of bass fishing, celebration of fishing fans from across the country. While the tournament pros are scouring the shallow, weedy waters of the Delta in search of a five-bass limit of largemouths each day, fishing fans will be enjoying an array of bass-related activities, including touring the gigantic B.A.S.S. Outdoor America show. On Saturday, the cavernous Superdome will be the stage for the crowning of the new Classic champion, a title worth $100,000 and as much as $1 million in related income from fishing industry sponsorships. Although the Delta is chock full of bass, the usual summertime doldrums could make the fishing a difficult affair during the Classic, according to its contestants. "I think the fishing^s going to be tough overall," said defending Classic champion Denny Brauer of Missouri. "I^ve struggled to catch fish in practice, and I don^t expect it to get much better." "There are a lot of good fish in this place," added Michigan^s Kevin VanDam, the reigning B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year. "But the fishing changes faster and more often than any place I^ve ever fished. Whoever wins this tournament will really deserve it."
