The Division of Fish and Wildlife reminds all marine recreational anglers that the fishing season for summer flounder will be closed Friday, July 16 through Saturday, Aug. 7. This closure is required to comply with a provision of the Interstate Fishery Management Plan for Summer Flounder to reduce the recreational fishing harvest of summer flounder by 40 percent in 1999 as part of stepped-up efforts to rebuild the population of the species along the Atlantic Coast. The plan, which was prepared by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council, affects coastal states from New England to Florida. In Delaware, closing the season for 23 days in the summer was preferred by a majority of those who made comments on the record for the public hearing the Division held in February.
