1998 Classic Winner
From: JoeReynolds

Image For some Classic champions, the year following their championship moment is often a forgettable one. Too much travel, too many outside distractions and an automatic invitation for next year usually adds up to a sub par performance.

Of course, none of that fazed Denny Brauer who quickly proved that he wasn't going to let up by winning the Kmart Top 150 on the Potomac River less than a month after his Classic win at High Rock. This made three Kmart victories in a row (two from the previous season) which propelled him through a season unlike any other experienced by a professional angler.

In addition to qualifying for this Classic on the Kmart Top 150 circuit, Brauer was featured in a five-page Sports Illustrated article and went toe-to-toe with David Letterman, not once, but twice on national television. In every aspect of his incredible year, Denny exhibited the dignity, grace and class of a true professional. For his fans and fellow competitors, it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
