There is no place that I have fished for bonefish where you will find more of them than Christmas Island. Christmas Island is the largest natural atoll in the world---the road that circumnavigates the atoll is 60 miles long. It lies 1,200 miles directly south of Hawaii and just a few miles from the equator. Because of its location, fishing is good throughout the year. A once-a-week flight takes you from Honolulu to Christmas Island--a flight lasting a little more than two hours over the vast Pacific Ocean. Bookings can be made through many travel agencies, although Frontiers International (800-245--1950) is the exclusive operator for the trips.

The people of the island are very friendly and the guides are excellent. The best of many great features about Christmas Island is that this is THE place to learn how to bonefish. Bonefish are one of the most easily frightened fish you will seek with a fly rod. They are my favorite of all species. We learn a great deal from our success when we catch fish., but, we also learn as much from our failures--and when bonefishing you don't get many second chances to do it right.

Because they are so plentiful, you are able to cast to many fish and soon learn how close you can drop a fly in front of one. You also learn quickly how to retrieve, and how to change tactics; how to hook and land bonefish. The sheer number of opportunities (there are days when you may see from 500 to a thousand) makes this the best location in the world to learn bonefishing. There are certain places where bigger bonefish can be caught (the majority of Christmas island Bonefish are less than 4 pounds), but this is the place to get both a first lesson and an advanced degree in how to fool this great trophy fish.
