| The trout of Tasmania are mostly browns
and rainbows, although a few places hold big brookies.
There are literally thousands of freshwater flats in
Tasmania, most of them readily accessible to the visiting
fly fisherman. There are good hatches of all the major
insects, including the large stonefly above. Browns
are notorious for night feeding , and the after-hours can
provide some exciting fishing. Plan on arriving just as
the sun gilds the hills and settles into its purple robes
at day's end. Size 8 and 10 black muddlers, fished with a
slow pull, or even allowed to lie still, will do very
well.
